The life of a terminally ill child is filled with doctors, hospitals, needles, and medications – a torrent of scary and painful experiences. This is especially true for children with different sensory experiences. Our client’s goal is to provide dignity and peace through a patient’s end-of-life care, and the site design reflects their holistic approach, providing a pleasant sensory experience.
Whether it’s through the small farm area, herb garden, music room, or spa-like amenities, guests can find relaxation in therapeutic activities and environments that suit their needs.
Attraction to nature is built into human biology. In studying how people interacted with the site naturally, we were able to leverage the most important features of the site. Designing around natural elements creates flexible spaces than resonate with the senses.
The playroom is a space where children of all ages can relax, create, and make friends.
The playroom would be dedicated to Antonio, a guest of the client who left a profound impact on the organization. The giraffe decor references his favorite animal, and the solar system mural mirrors one he had at home.
Colorful toys, video games, and a cozy reading nook provide a variety of ways to interact. Staff members provide play therapy to help children process their emotions.
The project is oriented around community spaces, with each 20-suite hospice house being designed around a communal dining table. Patients and family members experiencing similar challenges can find a place to belong and understand each other.
